About Us

Maryport is an attractive harbourside town located on the Solway Estuary at the edge of the Cumbrian Lake District. Steeped in history this charming coastal town is now the popular base for visitors wanting to experience the best of Cumbria from stunning coastal walks and clean beeches to the spectacular vistas of the high fells.

Maryport’s rich history can be seen displayed in the Senhouse Roman Museum which charts the town’s beginnings as a command and supply base at the western end of Hadrian’s Wall. The Roman presence in the area dates back to AD122 when a fort named Alauna was built to protect the western flank of the wall and stop it from being circumvented by crossing the Solway.

The town’s seafaring roots can be found in the Maryport Maritime Museum, which charts the town’s 2000 year-long association with the sea. The museum contains noted exhibits about two of the town’s former residents: Fletcher Christian the mutinous Master Mate of the HMS Bounty and Thomas Ismay the founder of the White Star Line, the company that owned the Titanic.

The town makes for the perfect getaway destination, whether you love walking, sailing, fishing, golf, unique shops or lively pubs, Maryport has it all.
