Whilst public commemorations have not been able to be held this year, the Council has supported a number of events in 2020. Wreaths have been laid in recognition of VE75 Day & VJ75 Day at Flimby & Maryport War Memorials, flowers have been laid at the Aquilla memorial & the flag flown in recognition of VE75 Day, VJ75 Day, Armed Forces Day, Battle of Britain 80th anniversary & in commemoration of forces sweetheart Vera Lynne, following her passing.

Christmas Lighting Improvements

The Council has arranged for some additions to the Christmas lights in the area. Flimby Christmas Tree will be moved to the Village Green in the vicinity of ‘Woody’s’, where it should stand out more, & additional lights will be added to the trees at Netherhall Corner. The Council is also extending the lights at the bottom of Shipping Brow, to provide a continuous display from the Golden Lion round to the harbour side.


Many of the events which the Council supports have been cancelled in 2020, but the Council has provided additional support for Maryport Inshore Rescue & Shiver Me Timbers to enable them to keep operating. In addition, the following organisations have received grant funding in 2020:

Christmas Lights Switch-on

Maryport Christmas lights will be switched on at 5.00pm on Saturday 23 November. The switch-on will be preceded by an afternoon of fun & entertainment for all the family on Senhouse Street, commencing at 1.00pm, organised by the Town Council. Christmas Trees are being provided courtesy of Iggesund, positioned at Netherhall Corner, the Aquarium, the Cottage Hospital & on the corner of Brook Street, Flimby.
